Périnet Reserve

Parc National d'Andasibe - Mantadia (Périnet Reserve) :

This park is also known as Réserve Spéciale d'Analamazaotra, named after a river that traverses it. Most people know this reserve simply as Périnet. This park is the last refuge of the Babakoto or Indri the largest living lemur and the main attraction for visitors. This black and white teddy bear like Indri is a striking primate that performs its territorial displays early in the morning with a haunting and unforgettable cry that fills the forest. These animals are extremely agile leaping large distance while foraging and in Périnet they can be seen at very close range since there are a total of 62 family groups. However, this park has much more to offer such as woolly lemurs, gray bamboo lemurs, red fronted lemurs, aye-ayes and 11 species of tenrec. World wide, there are approximately 135 species of chameleons, over half of which occur only in Madagascar. In Périnet there are at least 8 species of Chameleons including the colorful Parson's Chameleon, the largest in the world! The park also attract dedicated birdwatchers since it hosts at least 109 bird species, including four species of ground rollers, the green sunbird, the very rare Madagascar red owl, the slender billed flufftail and the brown mesite. The park also hosts many attractive amphibians. Apart from the rich flora and fauna there are other interesting areas for the visitor inside the park such as Lac Vert (Green Lake), Bassin de Piscicuiture (Fish Farm), Lac Rouge (Red Lake) and the Párc à Orchidées. Night trails can be very rewarding to locate nocturnal creatures.
